White Night, with a hint of red
aka Running of the Bulls: Nola Style
We were looking at several ideas for our color theme night, which is always Friday night and almost always a color (white night, all black, Bayou Blue, or some other color) or type of dress (sparkle or Glow night). This year, we are going with a white theme, with a red sash or scarf to commemorate the “Running of the Bulls,” which will occur in New Orleans the next day.
Many of you know about the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, which has been going on since the 13th century, but do you know about the tradition that started 18 years ago and will take place during our event on Saturday, July 12th? In New Orleans, they always do things a little differently, and the Running of the Bulls “Nola'-style” is certainly different. You see, the people are chased by roller girls dressed up as bulls instead of actual bulls, usually in elaborately decorated helmets with horns wielding wiffle ball bats.
The runners will wear all-white clothing, with a red sash around their waists and a red scarf around their necks. Comfortable walking/running shoes are a must.
The crowd of runners is turned loose at 8 am sharp (we know it is early, but how fun is this!??!), and at some point, the roller bulls are turned loose, and they will hunt down and smack runners on the butts with their plastic baseball bats.
To be more authentic, go to the NOLA Bulls website and order SWAG by clicking on the merchandise tab. We really like their bandanas and red sashes. They have some cool T-shirts, too. Por Que No!
Check out this video (below) to see what is all about. Will you join us Saturday morning at 8 am? Hope to see you there…
