Your sexual health is a major indicator of your overall health. At the most recent Virtual Naughty event on Naughty Chat, we invited Dragonfly from Pure Orgasmic Love and E from Human Primates (aka, the hottest “power couple” ever) to log on and give us a few helpful tips on improving our sex lives on a long-term basis. It’s not enough to say to “eat right” or “sleep well,” while those things are important, we’re going to give you a few more things that you can incorporate in your everyday life that will help increase your stamina, enhance foreplay and benefit your overall health.

Here are 8 healthy habits you can develop for a better sex life:

Deep Breaths

We all know breathing is vital to our existence. Did you also know breathing can help you achieve longer, stronger orgasms? In Dragonfly’s virtual class “Orgasmic Breath,” she discussed various forms of breathing during sex. And while we’re pretty sure you’re breathing during sex (unless that’s not your thing—no judgment here), it’s the kind of breathing that can help amplify your sexual experience. The next time you’re getting Naughty, focus on taking deep breaths that come from your abdomen, inhaling quietly through your nose and softly exhaling out of our mouth. Try to focus on syncopating your breath with your partner’s. Pro-tip from Dragonfly: The next time your about to reach orgasm, hold your breath, allow the orgasm to come over you (pun intended) and release.

Eat Healthy Fats

There was once a point in time when fats were seen as a big no-no. But more studies are showing, that consuming a diet rich in healthy fats, such as omega-3s, can actually be a major “Yes, YES” when it comes to supporting your libido and stamina. E from Human Primates, spoke about the importance of consuming healthy fats in his recent virtual class “Bedroom Keto.” Eating foods that have healthy fats, like salmon, eggs, avocados, cheese and healthy oils (olive, MCT or coconut), help promote blood flow through your body, keeping the circulatory system working properly. Seeds and nuts also contain healthy fats that are required in the production of sex hormones.

Exercise

It’s crystal clear that exercise has many benefits; it helps manage your weight, improves heart health and even helps fight stress and anxiety. But exercise can also be great for your sex life. For men, exercise can enhance the reliability of adequate functioning during sex and percentage of satisfying orgasms. And for women, exercise increases physiological sexual arousal in women—meaning women are more likely to want to get down right after working out. In additional it also helps improves the body’s strength and flexibility with positions.

Cut out processed foods

Processed foods, especially all-purpose or white flour, are stripped of many nutrients which are vital for sexual health. One such nutrient, the mineral zinc, is essential to a man’s reproductive health. Additionally, eating large amounts of all-purpose flour without adequate protein and fats can lead to insulin resistance and, eventually, diabetes. Diabetes can, in turn, narrow one’s arteries, increasing the risk of heart disease and erectile dysfunction. Foods that contain sweeteners, especially aspartame, may affect your serotonin levels, a vital hormone in helping you get in the mood.

Eat Dark Chocolate

There’s a reason why chocolate and romance go together so well. Dark chocolate, specifically, contains phenylethylamine and serotonin which are stimulants and mild mood boosters. It’s also rich in antioxidants and caffeine which can increase blood flow and jump-start your libido. E recommends consuming dark chocolate that’s at 85%, which is the fat level and great for circulation.

Do your kegels

While working out can definitely help enhance your sex drive, don’t forget to workout the muscles down below too! Doing kegel exercises will strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, giving you more control over ejaculation and strengthening your orgasms.  Try squeezing your pelvic floor muscles for 3 seconds, then release for 3 seconds. Do this 10 times in a row. That’s one set. If you can’t do 10, do as many as you can and build up over time. Try to work up to one set of 10 Kegels two to three times a day.

Limit alcohol consumption

Ever heard of the term “whiskey dick?” Too much alcohol often causes poor erectile functioning. For women, it can dehydrate the vagina, causing penetration to be uncomfortable, even painful. Also, being inebriated is sometimes a passive way to not be present with our partner or able to understand their sexual and emotional needs. Try not to go too crazy on the drinks while spending time with your partner if you know it may/will lead to sex.

Pay attention to your partner

Make it a habit to LISTEN to your partner. Try to pay attention to what they like, what their body responds to, what kinds of gestures get them going and act on it. Sex is not supposed to be selfish or self-serving. Ask questions, listen to the answers and then show what you’ve learned about them the next time you’re in the sack together.
